Reminds me of some time in the mid-late ’90s when I asked my dad if our home PC “had internet.” Because I didn’t know what made the internet actually work or even how it worked — I just wanted it. He had to explain what a modem was and that no, we did not have internet. I would not send my first email until another 2 years after that.

It’s time for another heartwarming visit to the Department of Awesome Parenting where we meet David LaFerriere, graphic designer, “illustrator with geek-like tendencies,” and a completely awesome dad. Located in Attleboro, Massachusetts, David has been drawing delightful illustrations on his kids’ lunchtime sandwich bags since 2008 and has photographed almost all of them.

Consider the scope of this for just a moment: So many sandwiches… So many drawings… Over 1100 of them now and he’s still going!

David’s lucky kids get to enjoy new surprise drawings (and the sandwiches themselves) every day, but we get to enjoy them all at once over on his Flickr account.

For what may seem to parade as a lack of plot and substance at first, Trash Humpers proves to delve deeper into the American psyche turning from points of total demented absurdity, beguiling violence and eerie urban landscapes to a VHS testament of ultimately remorseful trauma and human isolation. It may appear pretentious and disturbing, even inhumane, but the trash humpers are far too funny and fascinating to look away.

Brief Synopsis:

A group of aging senior-citizens film their shenanigans and desecrations in a run-down American town.

In order to stay more active in the brain and creativity departments, I’ve started this new film review blog. Check it out for irregular updates on both new and old cool films and the watercolor film stills to accompany them!
